Health: People and Planet

Food Sanity, Green Living Columns, Health, Lifestyle

Every home should have a library. It doesn’t even have to be an entire room; just a special place to keep your books will do, or perhaps it’s simply a cozy spot to read your latest treasure from the public library. The point is to value the experience of reading good books. A library is […]

Beach trash is mostly plastic.

Our Tragic, Plastic World

Big Picture, GD, Green Living Columns, Lifestyle

One thing that distinguishes human beings from other species, according to human beings anyway, is our use of tools. There are a few other animals that use primitive tools but they are quite limited in number and scope. We, on the other hand, are so damn smart! Not only did we invent shovels, we used […]

A Breath of Fresh Air

Green Living Columns, Health, Lifestyle

There’s nothing like a breath of fresh air, especially on one of those rare mornings following an overnight storm that scoured the valley, purging the smog and ushering in sharp, clear vistas. It usually doesn’t take long for the views to soften again as particulates, chemicals, exhaust and other contaminants begin to reestablish the haze. […]

Energy Evolution: Efficiency is Key

Efficiency, Green Living Columns

Our homes are taking on a new and very important role in terms of energy: they are becoming an integral and active part of the electric grid system. The existing model of electrical generation, distribution and use, one that has basically changed little for over one hundred years, is about to take a major leap […]

Waterfall

Personal Waterfall

Clean Energy, Green Living Columns, Water

Back in the days of old, taking a warm shower was a luxury that few could afford on a regular basis. Water had to be fetched from a well or stream, then heated by fire from wood chopped by hand in the forest (assuming there was one nearby). It took a lot of effort to […]

Oil rig fire.

Ending Our Addiction to Oil

Big Picture, Clean Energy, GD, Green Living Columns, Transportation

The oil spill off the Louisiana shore is exacting a huge toll on the environment. Another thread is being pulled from the grand tapestry of life and, no matter how distant, it affects us all. Fingers are being pointed in plenty of directions, but how many of us take personal responsibility for the disaster? We […]

Earth Day – or rather, Eaarth Day

Big Picture, Events, Green Living Columns

April 22 should be a GLOBAL holiday of deep significance. Seriously, I mean that. I can’t think of any other day whose meaning carries greater potential or consequence for life. It should be a celebration, and calibration, of our future. Earth is home to all people; every religion, nationality, race and political persuasion – not […]

Earth Day in Southern Nevada

Events

Want to make sure that you don’t miss out on any of the events that are being scheduled for Earth Day? The Southern Nevada Group of the Sierra Club (Toiyabe Chapter) has created a special website just for EarthDay – check it out at EarthDayLV.com. The site is aiming to list all the local events […]

Housing’s Silver Lining

Green Living Columns

They say that every cloud has a silver lining. That might be even more appropriate here in the Silver State, since the clouds caused by the housing market have caused more than a passing shadow. However, the sun is beginning to peek through, and it’s shining a bright light on some activities in the housing […]

Carbon-Neutral Nevada

Green Living Columns

I think it’s time to set a big, audacious goal for Nevada. Let make it the nation’s first carbon-neutral state. That doesn’t mean we have to stop driving, cooking or heating our homes. It does mean that we would make a major commitment throughout the state to reduce energy consumption and increase renewable energy production. […]

Paying the Truth

The quickest way to create energy security, environmental healing and global social equity requires something we've never had - an honest marketplace.

If we simply "Pay the Truth" for the things we do, whether it is drilling, spilling and burning carbon or failing to safely use and then store nuclear waste, things will change for the better very quickly.
