Earth Day's GREENFest

GREENFest 2011For green living aficionados, nothing beats Earth Day, the greenest holiday of the year. Unlike most holidays that celebrate significant past events, Earth Day celebrates our future. It’s an event that is increasingly relevant to more people every year. The coolest thing about Earth Day is that people gather not only to celebrate and have fun, but to learn and share new ways of living lighter on the planet.

Earth Day is an equal opportunity holiday. Celebrated by people in countries around the world, it is truly a global event. The Earth Day Network is an excellent resource (www.earthday.org) with information about programs and events that may interest you.

Winter Solstice - Imagining Home

My perspective of home expands when I think of the coming winter solstice. A few of the sun’s rays reach deep into my office as I write these words, an occurrence peculiar to this time of year and south-facing windows. Other beams of light meet a different fate, ending their eight-minute sojourn from the nuclear furnace at the center of our little planetary system by striking the panels atop my roof, transforming their marvelous energy into a useful flow of electrons. I can see it in my little desktop display: 4.031 kilowatts at the moment. Amazing! It’s all about angles and orientation, in step with natural rhythms that resonate throughout the infinity of space and time.

Greenbuilding - Local & Global

Diversity helps build strength and resiliency. Nowhere was this more apparent than at last week’s Greenbuild conference in Phoenix, AZ. Over 28,000 people from around the world gathered to share, learn and plan for the continued acceleration of green building practices. The opening plenary included reports by U.S. Green Building Council leaders from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa and Taiwan. Green building is driving global change.

We’re not just thinking globally now, we’re acting globally. Every person in every home has a role to play, a contribution to make, a vision to create. It’s exciting to know that people everywhere are engaged in this process now.

ECOlogy-ECOnomy

Ecology-EconomyLooking at the origins of words can be revealing. For example, “ecology” and “economy” are both derived from the Greek word “ecos” which means home.  Ecology is literally the study of home. Economy is the management of home.

These days, many people think of liberal scientists or tree-huggers when they hear about ecology or the environment, while the economy has become an all-important man-made deity that must be “saved” at all costs. I am dismayed when I realize that these two concepts, originally so intertwined, are now more often than not, diametrically opposed.

We’ve all heard someone say that tackling issues like climate change will be too damaging to the economy (although it will be quite the contrary). There are countless examples that illustrate how our economic priorities are exclusive of the environment.

The earth, much like our individual homes, is inextricably linked to and indeed is the very source of our economy. The recent economic meltdown is a good example of the fundamental importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced real estate market. But it is also an indicator of a deeper, more systemic problem.
